Jen Lampton rocks
Definitely one of the best instructions on one of the most, if not the most frustrating part of Drupal.
Following Jen's instructions you can get TinyMCE to work with wysiwyg 6-2.x I've tested with standalone and multisite environments. It is a plus if your server can run php-gd2 but not a requirement.
Non-English users: alternate language may remain an issue. Problems with languages resulting in a 'white node of death' despite installing all language packs (including those of tinymce and its activated plugins) may indicate dns resolvement issues with your server.
Update 10-21-2009: In light of Filefield being integrated in core in Drupal 7, Quicksketch has stopped development on Filefield insert and replaced it with Insert.
